Derek Speare Designs P1 Racing Controller Review

As one of the leaders in buttons boxes and other peripherals Derek Speare designs has created the P1 for certain types of sim racing rigs.  This is a compact design that is best suited for in dash type installation.  The P1 controller features 25 different buttons or inputs via 6 two way toggles, 4 push buttons, 4 rotary dials and a single lite up button in the middle.  In this review we show off the design of the button box and talk about the quality of its construction.  We also mount the box and use it out on track to see how it compares to other boxes available.

Shaun I've never used a button box before.  What actions did you program to the buttons so you didn't have to use the keyboard?  I mean, specifically your functions.

After a few more weeks of usin ghtis box I can tell you it is one of my favorite.  Many button boxes use high quality parts and this one is no different, but I am really enjoying the panel mount solution for this one and it finishes my rig off so nicely.

I also heard from DES racing and they make some cool printed overlays for DSD boxes.  I am going to get one and see what the box looks like then.

Here is some more information about these from a post at the iraicng site by DES Racing:

Hi guys,

I'm offering laminated sheets that would go on top of DSD button boxes and G27 shifters. Similar to a face plate if you want.

Prices are as follow

- Laminated with double sided tape: $11.95 USD
- Laminated with velcro sticky back: $12.50 USD

All prices include worldwide shipping.

If you are interested send me a PM with the text and background you want. To keep things simple, go left to right and top to bottom.

Payment will be via PayPal

Model supported**

Track Boss
Mini Max
G27 shifter

DSD Trackbox (Gen1) face plate front

Looks great. I like the rounded corners. I have a couple of boxes made by someone else and they have sharp corners. But they do make racing so much easier and more natural.

Nice review Shaun. Got the P1 at Christmas and funny enough, just finished a panel mount with it yesterday. As you stated, looks great that way. I have to agree with your "crickets" about rating the button box - it is elegant, sturdy, and works lika a charm.

TP needs some updating. It is not very intuitive for new users. Instructions are hard to follow at times. Support response is in need of someone's dedication. Having individual paints is a real attraction within iRacing. This needs to be done better or replaced! â€‹Interesting that without member support there would be no answers or help. It's a shame, the program is so popular not to have good management.

Hey Shaun:

I was hoping to participate in the next race and on Simracing System it says it's at Fuji. Which version of Fuji should I download.

I am all signed up and ready to race in the Carrera Cup, except for one thing.  How do I obtain Road America?  I do not have it in AC as one of my tracks.  Where is it?
